Subject: The availability for public review of Business Plans proposed by
Technical Committees of the International Organization for Standardization
(ISO).
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO), based in Geneva,
has asked all 188 Technical Committees (TC's) to produce a Business Plan
(BP) for public review on the web. Each ISO Technical Committee is
therefore inviting its global industries to review its plan and to provide
feedback.
(Please not that all Electrical Technical Committees fall under the
jurisdiction of the International Electrotechnical Commission[IEC])
ISO headquarters developed a template for uniform presentation of such a BP
by all TC's. As a result, most BP's will be large since a major section is
taken up by a listing of work items and published standards. Each BP
however will provide a global report on the state of its industry as to
capacities, production and markets for a period between 1999-2002. It will
also provide a description of the scope of its Technical Committee.
With the existence of a very detailed categorization by the ISO Central
Secretariat, I have developed a more condensed version of categorization.
This listing is shown below:
Categories of ISO Technical Committees:
Agriculture Material handling
Chemical Measurements
Combustion Metals
Communications Minerals
Construction Process equip.
Definitions Quality
Domestic Safety
Energy Scientific
Environment Systems
Forest Transport-Air
Glass & Ceramics (G & C) Transport-Ground
Health Care Transport-Water
The original time frame for Business
Plans on the web was to be three months, however it appears that this has
been extended considerably.
To access a BP on the Internet, go to: <www.iso.ch/bp> and select the TC of
your choice: <ISO/TC xxx>.
Adobe Acrobat Reader (pdf) is required to read a Business Plan.
Send your reply to the Secretary of the TC as listed under: <Send e-mail>.
In case any Industry within the Hamilton ASQ area is interested to find out
how it could become involved with the development of ISO Standards, please
give me a call or send me an e-mail message. It is worth noting that while
ISO Standards are voluntary around the world, the European Standards by
CEN, based often on ISO Standards, are mandatory throughout the European
Union. I am Chairman of ISO/TC6 (Paper, board and pulps), being responsible
for the 1997 publication of the Handbook for ISO/TC6 Standards, and a
CD-ROM in 1998 for a revised edition.
