Tour
of Hamilton Waterworks
Tuesday,
October 21, 2008
- 7:00
PM
Park in front of the Environmental Laboratory at 700 Woodward
Avenue,
located at the corner of Brampton and Woodward.
(See map below)
The
evening will start with a presentation by Shane McCauley, Superintendent of
Service Coordination
for the Water & Wastewater Division of Public
Works. Shane is
on the lead implementation
team for
the
Drinking Water Quality
Management System (DWQMS), and will give an overview of the system.
Having an effective Drinking Water Quality Management System ensures that
the City of Hamilton can operate its own water systems and the drinking
water quality is not just maintained but continually improved. The DWQMS is
also a driver of the larger, BCOS (Beyond Compliance Operating System) which
takes in our wastewater systems and provides due diligence for environmental
management of all Water and Wastewater Divisional activities, as well as
Health and Safety.
Strong adherence to regulatory deadlines is a requirement and compliance is
one way of measuring success. The determination of success of the
implementation of the DWQMS will be conducted via audits by third-party
auditors appointed by the Ministry of the Environment. Once approved, the
City will receive a license to manage its own facilities
We will be looking at how Hamilton is
approaching this new system,
as well as some of the challenges encountered in the process.
This 20-minute presentation will be followed by
a tour of Hamilton’s water treatment facilities at 700 Woodward Avenue.
Hard hats will be provided.
Sensible shoes are required - no open toed shoes or high heels.
The Section will be charging $20
per person for this tour.
Fees will be collected on the day of the tour, prior to the 7:00 pm
presentation.
Please arrive a few minutes before 7:00 pm.
If you did not register already, please contact Judi Mansfield-Jones at
jmj@nanoquestinc.com
to register for this tour

Call for Members to Volunteer for Sub-Committees
Your ASQ
Hamilton executive is working on strategies to ensure that your section
continually improves the value offered to its membership. Currently, we have
identified a need for two sub-committees:
1. Website/Internet Sub-Committee
2. Awareness/Recruitment Sub-Committee
As with all
tasks, a team effort can bring forth unimagined success and innovation. We
encourage you, our valued members, to consider participating in one or both
of these two ASQ Hamilton sub-committees. To paraphrase
Roberto M. Saco, ASQ President: We all need to get involved in as many
“Really Big Q” conversations as possible. This is your opportunity to do
just that.
Each
sub-committee will be required to first develop a project charter with a
scope and responsibilities for the project. Every attempt will be made to
meet through email communications and may require one meeting in
person. Time requirements for this phase are estimated at a few hours per
month spread out over several months.
The next
phase would be to complete the project. Depending on the sub-committee, a
few members will be asked to market and/or conduct presentations. For your
efforts, each sub-committee member will receive 1.5 RU points per year.

Certification Study Materials Available for Loan
The Hamilton Section Executive is pleased to
make Certification Examination preparation materials available to our
membership. Section members can sign-out these resources, free of
charge. Resources include study materials for: CQT, CQM, CQA, CQIA,
CRE, CMI, and CSQ. These are not the ASQ's latest versions of the
certification body of knowledge, but they will serve to give a good overview
of the material and help members determine the scope and focus of each
certification. (Members are encouraged to obtain the latest
versions prior to completing their studies in order to ensure that they are
completely up-to-date.)
To borrow these materials, please contact Jane Devries jdevrie@mcmaster.ca.
The materials will be available for 3-month loans on a first come, first
served basis, and can be picked up at section meetings.
If you have materials that you would like to offer for the Section library,
please also contact Jane.
